Emily Brontë was one of the most appreciated writers of the nineteenth century, although she had been completely unknown in her lifetime. Her only novel, Wuthering Heights, today has a lasting position in the canon of the world literature. Supernatural encounters, crumbling ruins, moonless nights and grotesque imagery, seeking to create effects of mystery and fear, place Wuthering Heights, partly on the Gothic tradition of the late eighteenth century.
