A Portrait of The Artist As a Young Man

Joyces first novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was serialized in 1914 and published in book form in 1916. In this semiautobiographical novel, Joyce desribed forming of an artist through his inner struggles against the limitations imposed by the church, nationality and family. In the novel, he also made a number of references to the politics and religion of early-twentieth-century Ireland.
