Hüseyni, Kabil doğumlu olup Alevilik mezhebine mensup bir yazardır. Babası Afganistan Dış İşleri Bakanlığında çalışmıştır. 1970 yılında baba Hüseyni, Afganistan Elçiliğindeki görevi dolayısıyla ailesiyle birlikte Tahran, İran'a yerleşmiştir. 1973 yılında Hüseyni ailesi, Halit'in erkek kardeşinin doğacak olması sebebiyle Kabil'e geri dönmüştür.
