The complexes, which are the biggest structures of Turkish architectural history, were intitutions which responded to the diverse needs of people and played very crucial roles in social life. The mosque , which stood at he center of a complex, was the pivotal point around which all life revolved. People, receiving nourishment from such a center, became spiritually mature. Besides, they continued to be enriched intellectually and spiritually by utilizing the services offered by the school (madrasa), hospital and public kitchen. Eventually they would become a perfect human being who had balanced the material and spiritual aspects of life.
