Dead Souls

Gogols masterpiece, Dead Souls, which first appeared in 1842 under the title imposed by the censorship, The Adventures of Chichikov, is a masterpiece of realist literature and offers a satiric panorama of Russian provincial life with grotesque characterizations. Dead Souls is generally compared to Don Quixote and to The Pickwick Papers as a picaresque novel.
